Successful decision-makers focus on what they can control when making decisions. They focus on three elements of choice to achieve this.
These are:
To be clear, I’m not saying successful decision-makers have total control over these elements. Far from it. But, successful people understand that they can influence and have some form of control over the three elements, so they exercise it.
These three elements form the foundation's of choice. Every decision is made using information from the past, anticipated outcomes, and action to deliver the said outcome. Ask yourself: are you making decisions based on your control of these elements of choice?
It is easy to get lost in the myriad of mental models when it comes to processing information. It is easy to let our cognitive biases fool us into chasing an outcome which comes with no guarantee, even though we go all in. It is easy to think action lies in the hands of others.
This is the challenge you have to deal with in your head.
The successful have worked out what they control and what they don’t. And then they hyperfocus on what they do control.
This takes us to this week’s One Weekly Decision. To improve the quality of your decisions, you should focus on the three elements of choice. See the different aspects of each part, and work on maximising the control you have. Leave behind what you can’t control.
Steve Maraboli said, “Incredible change happens in your life when you decide to take control of what you do have power over instead of craving control over what you don't.” His point is highly pertinent in the field of decision-making and one worthy of attention.
